Leather Care
Leather Care
Black Oak Leather products are crafted from Horween and Conceria Walpier leather that are designed to age naturally and beautifully. Each piece will soften, deepen in color, and develop a unique patina that reflects the way you use it. These leathers require very little maintenance, and in many cases the best care is simply regular use.
Below are a few gentle guidelines to help your leather age gracefully.
Everyday Care
Keep it dry when possible
If your piece gets slightly wet, simply pat it dry with a clean cloth and allow it to air‑dry at room temperature. Both Chromexcel and Dublin can handle light moisture, but they should never be dried with heat.
Handle with clean hands
Natural oils from your skin help the leather develop character, but clean hands keep the finish even and prevent buildup.
Avoid long periods of direct sunlight
Sunlight naturally darkens leather over time. This is often a beautiful part of the patina, but too much direct exposure can lead to uneven color.
Keeping the Surface Looking Its Best
A soft, dry cloth is all you need for routine care. Light brushing with a horsehair brush helps keep the surface clean and gently brings out the natural sheen of both Chromexcel and Dublin.
Small scuffs or marks can often be smoothed out by simply rubbing the area with your fingertip or a soft cloth. The warmth from your hands helps the natural oils settle back into the leather.
Conditioning (Only When Needed)
Our leathers are selected for their durability and natural richness. Horween Chromexcel is heavily infused with oils and waxes, Horween Dublin features a naturally waxed surface, and Conceria Walpier vegetable‑tanned leather is drum‑dyed and carefully finished to age gracefully with minimal intervention. Because of this, none of these leathers require frequent conditioning.
Condition only when necessary—such as when the leather appears noticeably dry, loses depth, or has been exposed to harsh elements for extended periods.
Use a light leather conditioner sparingly. A small amount worked gently into the surface is all that’s needed.
More is not better. Over‑conditioning can oversaturate the leather and diminish its natural character.
With proper, minimal care, these leathers will continue to soften, deepen, and develop a rich patina unique to your use over time.
Natural Variations
Full‑grain leather carries its own character. Variations in grain, small markings, and changes in tone are natural and are not considered flaws. These details are part of the charm of Chromexcel and Dublin and are what allow your piece to develop such a personal patina over time.
Storage
If you store your item for a longer period, keep it in a cool, dry place. Use a cotton dust bag or a soft cloth instead of plastic, which can trap moisture.
Allow the leather to breathe, and it will stay healthy.
Let It Age
One of the most rewarding qualities of Horween/Walpier leather is how it evolves. Each crease, mark, and highlight becomes part of your story. The best way to care for your piece is simply to use it often and enjoy the natural changes that come with time.
