World-Class Leather, Chosen Without Compromise

We work exclusively with leathers from two of the most respected tanneries in the world: Horween Leather Company in the United States and Conceria Walpier in Italy. Though separated by geography, both share the same philosophy—patience, tradition, and an uncompromising dedication to quality.

Horween Leather

American Craftsmanship Since 1905

Horween Leather Company has been producing world-class leather in Chicago since 1905. Known globally for its consistency, integrity, and traditional tanning methods, Horween remains one of the last major tanneries to control the entire tanning process under one roof.

Horween leather has earned its place at the highest levels of performance. It is trusted throughout professional sports in the United States—used in NFL footballs, NBA basketballs, and a significant portion of professional-grade baseball gloves. When strength, durability, and long-term reliability matter most, Horween is the standard.

For our work, we focus on two of Horween’s most iconic leathers: Chromexcel and Dublin.

Chromexcel

Chromexcel is one of Horween’s most celebrated leathers. Produced through a lengthy and meticulous combination tanning process that takes nearly a full month, Chromexcel is heavily conditioned with natural oils and waxes. This results in a leather that is smooth, supple, and substantial in the hand.

Chromexcel is known for its distinctive pull-up effect and remarkable aging properties. With use, it darkens, softens, and develops depth and variation that reflect how it is carried and handled. Over time, no two pieces age the same—each becomes entirely its own.

Dublin

Dublin leather offers a more textured, organic expression of leather. Built on the same vegetable-tanned base as Horween’s Essex, Dublin is finished with a proprietary blend of waxes that emphasize the natural grain of the hide.

This leather showcases character from the start, with visible depth and subtle variation. As it ages, Dublin develops a warm, earthy patina that grows richer and more dramatic with continued use. It is a leather that rewards time, touch, and daily carry.

Conceria Walpier

Italian Vegetable‑Tanned Excellence Since 1974

To complement Horween’s American heritage, we also work with Conceria Walpier, one of Italy’s most respected vegetable tanneries. Located in Tuscany and founded in 1974, Walpier is a founding member of the Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium, an organization dedicated to preserving centuries-old tanning traditions.

Walpier leathers are produced using only natural tannins extracted from tree bark, combined with modern precision and strict environmental standards. The result is leather that is exceptionally clean, dense, and refined—yet rich with character.

Renowned for clarity of grain, vibrant depth, and extraordinary aging qualities, Walpier leather is considered among the finest in the world. It develops a smooth, luminous patina over time, becoming more expressive and elegant the longer it is used. These are leathers chosen by luxury craftsmen globally for their balance of beauty, structure, and longevity.

100% Solid Brass Hardware

All hardware used in Black Oak Leather goods is made from 100 percent solid brass. Brass has been valued for centuries for its strength, corrosion resistance, and timeless appearance. Unlike plated metals, solid brass will not chip or peel—it maintains its integrity and develops a natural, warm patina with age.

Brass does not rust or degrade over time. Its aging process complements premium leather perfectly, creating a cohesive and harmonious look as both materials mature together. This is why brass has long been used in marine environments, architecture, and durable mechanical components. Every fastener, snap, buckle, and rivet we use is selected with longevity in mind.

YKK Zippers

When a design requires a zipper, we use YKK—globally recognized as the most reliable zipper manufacturer in the world. YKK controls every stage of its production process to ensure precision, consistency, and long-term durability.

The result is a zipper that operates smoothly, stays aligned, and performs reliably even after years of daily use. A zipper should never be the weak point of a well-made leather good. With YKK, it never is.

A Commitment to Lasting Quality

Choosing Black Oak Leather means choosing materials with proven histories and uncompromising standards. Horween Chromexcel and Dublin bring over a century of American craftsmanship. Conceria Walpier offers the refinement and tradition of Italian vegetable tanning. Solid brass hardware ensures lifelong strength, and YKK zippers provide dependable performance where it matters most.

Every product is designed to be used, worn, and relied upon daily—built to age gracefully and become more beautiful with time. These materials were chosen not for trends, but for permanence, restraint, and understated luxury.
